“Christopher Hogwood’s incisive mind regularly leads to strong and imaginative concepts and this, the first of a series of clavichord discs dedicated to Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, is a perfect example. The clavichord has a history of domestic usage, the intimate nature of its utterances seeming both exquisite and slightly enigmatic. Its main mechanical feature of stretching strings gives the player the ‘touch’ to grade dynamics, alter pitch through vibrating and other idiomatic colouring. These are delicate nuances with an instrument of such softness, offered as fleeting gestures, usually for the player’s ears alone.” – GRAMOPHONE

Jean-Jacques Rousseau – Le Devin du Village

27 tracks – MP3 192 Kbps – 2 RAR files (60Mb+56Mb)

Part 1Part 2

Le Devin du Village (“The Village Soothsayer”) is an opera by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, first performed before the court at Fontainbleau on 18 October 1752. King Louis XV so loved the work that he offered Rousseau a life pension, a great honor, but which Rousseau refused. The opera was one of the most popular of its day and gave Rousseau a great deal of fame and wealth.

An English translation by Charles Burney, The Cunning Man was performed in London in 1762. Rousseau’s work was the object of a parody in the Singspiel Bastien und Bastienne by the twelve-year-old Mozart.

Plot synopsis

Colin (tenor) and Colette (soprano) love one another, yet they suspect each other of being unfaithful. They each seek the advice and support of the village soothsayer (Le Devin; basso buffo or baritone) in order to reinforce their love. After a series of deceptions, Colin and Colette reconcile and are happily married.

PERFORMERS:

Dongkyu Choy (Tenor)
Thomas Muller De Vries (Bass)
Eva Kirchner (Soprano)

La Cetra, dir. and violin David Plantier

Francesco Venturini probably owed his Italian family name to the Italianate fashion of the period, but his native region is thought to be Flanders, given that the baptismal register for his children describe him as Bruxellensis.

…In spite of the title ”concerti” we are dealing here with an extensive collection of ”sonatas” (a rather odd designation when the term ”suite” would be more appropriate)…

…Venturini’s music possesses all the qualities needed to captivate the listener. By turns nimble and dramatic, cheerful and serious, it invariably displays great refinement. Perfectly synthesising the different musical movements of the time, the composer devotes his subtle art to a quest for expressiviness, yet without thereby losing any of his spontaneity. The rediscover of his Concerti da Camera Op.1 is most certainly a significant event for our knowledge of the early eighteenth-century orchestral repertory….
